About the area/map: The Point (Yr Allt) is a peninsula of mixed open land and forest dominated by one hill in the centre of the map. As such the area is surrounded on three sides by Llyn Clywedog reservoir. The open land is mainly fields with close-cropped grass thanks to the sheep. The forest is mainly mapped as light green and there is little to impeded progress. There are quite a few fences, paths and uncrossable hedges on the map. The area is bounded on the south side by a road; you should not need to run on the road, as there is a grass verge available next to it.
Map is 1:7500. Magnetic north correct as of 2011. Map surveyed 2011 by Steve Wills and cartography by Peter & Christine Roberts on behalf of Powys County Council.

Competitors need to be aware of IOF symbol for a linear thicket which is used to describe uncrossable hedges used as control sites.

Maps might be printed on waterproof paper but map bags will be available if required. Control descriptions will be IOF for blue and Light Green courses and written for orange & yellow courses and will be given out at registration.

Any last minute changes will be posted on the Mid Wales Orienteers website.

Location & Directions

The B4518 runs from Llanbrynmair to Llanidloes and Llyn Clywedog is clearly signposted off this road. South of Llyn Clywedog is a signpost onto a C-road for the Llyn at grid reference (SN932868) and this runs for two kilometres passing Bryntail mines until car parking is signed at Y Dremfa Deg viewing point. Parking is in this car park and if full go through car park which is one way and park on grass on opposite side of the C-road about 200 metres from registration. No charges for car park.

Course information

Usual POW club event courses. Blue, Light Green, Orange, Yellow and White. All courses except Yellow and White have two compulsory routes through crossing points as marked on course maps; for your own safety do not stray from the compulsory routes.

Planning has had to consider the following details, which have a bearing on the courses offered at this event:-

Safety- the area is surrounded on three sides by water and on one side there is a steep slope down to the water which I need to competitors to stay away from.

Technicality- the area has several marked paths and many other line handrails such as fences and hedges. There are also few challenging control sites available. The map as a whole is quite small.

Terrain- despite the climb on each course the running under foot is fast being mainly paths or short-cropped grass.

The courses on offer are:-

Short Blue 4.3km 270m climb
Light Green 3.0km 210m climb
Orange 1.9km 130m climb
Yellow 1.3km 130m climb
White 0.8km 60m climb

Info for dog owners

General public will be using the car park and can access the competition area. Much of the area has sheep and lambs on so while dogs can go on the area they must be on leads at all times. Failure to adhere to this will result in the competitor being disqualified and we may not be allowed to use the area again. I would be happier if you did not run with your dog to reduce any risk to livestock on the area.

Facilities

Toilets, cafe, picnic area.
The Red Kite Kiosk (café) in the event car park have been informed the event is taking place (open daily 10.30am - 5.00pm in the summer). Toilets: use facilities in Llanbrymair or Llanidloes. No drinks will be provided, bring your own and take the waste home. Llanidloes has many public houses and food establishments.

Safety and Risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.
