Aberystwyth University 2018

,

Date of event: Sun 16th Dec 2018
Level of event: Local (D)
Nearest town: Aberystwyth

This event is organised by Mid Wales Orienteering Club with kind permission from Prifysgol Aberystwyth University. It is open to everyone, so come and give orienteering a go - the great outdoors game!
It's an urban event around Aberystwyth University planned by Megan, our GB elite squad orienteer.
It'll take you to parts of the university that other activities fail to reach and afterwards we'll be celebrating the past year of O with a meal on campus at Ta Med Da - the more the merrier and a great chance for everyone to meet like minded folks, share stories and experiences.
So folks make sure the Aber Uni O event on  December 16th is in your calendar.
A warm welcome awaits you all! x

Ideal for all ages and abilities, with a 2k and 4k course to choose, for runners, walkers and also for families with children! Loads of help is available from our friendly Welcome Team and no experience is necessary. Please make sure under 16s are accompanied by an adult to ensure safe road crossings. The short  course is planned to avoid any busy roads but there may be some traffic collecting students from accommodation.
 accommodation.
New to orienteering? It's a  walk/run with a difference - an orienteering race doesn't follow a set route. Instead you have to visit a series of checkpoints and register each one with an electronic timing chip. The checkpoints are marked by flags on the ground and may be along paths, fences, earth banks, streams or anywhere in the woods. The challenge is to race between each one, choosing your own route between the checkpoints, using a special orienteering map (which you get to keep too). Why not come and give it a go?

Sorry – no dogs allowed on the university campus so please leave your canine helpers at home for this event.

Terrain

Can you outfox the planner - Are you up to the navigation challenge? The University campus is mapped in great detail with lots of great choices to work out the best way to go. A real maze of buildings, paths and trees with flights of steps, bridges and cut throughs.

Course information

Megan has planned two Christmas special courses.

Long – 4km straight line, 100m climb

Short – 2km straight line, 50m climb

Please ask if you would like any help choosing which course to do. It is best to choose an easier course to start with if you are new to orienteering. The distance is the straight line between controls on the map but the actual distance you cover will be longer depending on your route choices.
