The Begwns 2021
Date of event: Sat 26th Jun 2021
Level of event: Local (D)
Nearest town: Painscastle Powys
Please note this event will no longer be a VO event and will now be run as a Si event with stakes and kites. I apologise for the change at this late date.
The location of the event will be The Begwns, which is situated between Hay-on-Wye and Painscastle. This is a beautiful area of natural common land, normally covered by bracken and with a good network of paths. The area rises up to 1350 ft, and gives outstanding views in all directions.
Normally the bracken would be high by now but due to previous weather conditions it has only just started to grow therefore the area is very open, which means some path ways are not clear. Hopefully by the 26th June this will have changed.
Location & Directions
Travelling from the south head for Clyro on the A438, grid reference SO213436. Look for a turning to your left signposted Painscastle, which will have a telephone box on the right hand side as you turn into the junction. Follow this road to Painscastle for 6.2kms. The road climbs up over the edge of the common and begins to descend, near the bottom look for a signpost for Llandewifach Church, turn left here. Within 10 metres turn left again and continue along a very narrow road, crossing a cattle grid near the top, which brings you on to the common continue to the brow of the hill and the assembly area will be on your right.

Please be careful on the road from the Llandewifach Church junction as this is a single track road with just a few passing places, so be aware of oncoming traffic. Generally speaking this is a very quiet road but does get used more frequently on the weekends by people going for walk on the common.
The assembly area and parking (grid reference SO161441) will be situated just off the right hand side of the road on a grassy but firm area; you will be directed to a parking place.
