2014 BBC Wales Sports Personality Unsung Hero Award

Bill with his award at Gregynog,

Bill found out last week that he had been short listed with two other candidates for the award and BBC Presenter Claire Summers came with the camera crew to film him in action last Wednesday at the South Powys School Championships. The film was then taking back for submission to the selection panel and we were informed that we would probably be told by Monday the result. Although Ken, Gabriella and I were informed of the result last Monday we were given strict instructions to keep it a surprise. So Bill was unaware of the fact until Claire came up to him from behind whilst he was talking to a group of children and tapped him on the shoulder to turn around to see Claire with the award much to his surprise especially as his wife Andrea had been secretly brought to the venue to witness the presentation. There was a spontaneous roar of cheers and clapping from the children, helpers and teachers who were standing there when the award was presented.

Not only does this award reflect on all the work that Bill has put in over the years, but also gives the Club and the sport at long last the recognition it deserves. Please tune in to "BBC Wales Today" at 6.30pm this evening (Thursday 20th November) to see a short news item of the presentation. Bill will now be forwarded as the Welsh winner for selection for the UK Sports Personality Unsung Hero Awards along with twelve other regional winners from the UK.
