Croeso 2012

,

Orienteering is a great family activity enjoyed by people of all ages and works well as a family day out as there is a challenge for all ages and abilities on offer.
It’s a chance to get out and have an adventure!
The aim is to navigate, in order, between control points marked on a special orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and go at your own pace, you can even stop for a picnic if you want!
POW Mid Wales Orienteers is the local orienteering club and we would like to welcome you to Croeso the Welsh 6 Day Orienteering event from 22nd- 28th July 2012.
This is a big international event with 1900 competitors from all over the world entered already.
The good news is that it is also possible for you to come along on the day and soak up the atmosphere and have a go yourself.
You can come along on the day and follow signs to the assembly area and the information tent. You will be able to register for “Entry on the day”
There will be different levels of courses and you will need to choose which you would like to do. It is fine to register for one course and map and go round as a family group or for an adult to accompany a child. You can concentrate on the navigating and walk round or for those feeling confident you can go at a faster pace the choice is yours!
There is a free “string” course which is great fun for all younger children where you have a map with a course marked and a corresponding string winding round through the woods for children to follow to find the marked control points.
The white course is very easy with all controls on paths great for 6-10 year olds and family groups. Approx. 1km long
The yellow course uses simple linear features like paths, walls and streams and is mainly used by under 12s and family groups. Approx 2km long
The orange course allows progression to basic use of the compass and route choice and is ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters. Approx 2.5km
The light green course is ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses contours and ‘point’ features away from linear features. Approx 3km long
You will also need to hire a ‘dibber’ when your register which is the electronic chip which  you wear on your finger and records your visit to each control proving you have visited them and recording your time.
The Croeso website has directions on how to arrive at the different sites. Cars can arrive up until 12.30 and can leave after 1.00pm.
